ORIA Helps Miami Audio Engineer ‘Perfect It In Post’
DANIEL ABRUSCI: ORIA SUCCESS STORY

Dan Abrusci is a multi award-winning audio engineer based in Miami. He is the owner of Loyal Sound, which comprises a small team that takes care of the whole spectrum of audio for film & tv. Specialising in sound design, recording and mixing, Dan has worked with many top brands including ESPN, BBC, Adidas, Samsung, BMW and Breitling.

His work has been recognised with numerous awards and nominations, including three Emmy Awards (Suncoast chapter), two gold and two silver Promax, two Latin Grammy nominations as well as Tribeca and Berlinale official selections.

Recently he has been working on several documentaries for which he’s been trialling ORIA – mainly using it for surround sound.

Keen to know more, Audient asked Dan about how things worked before ORIA

Before ORIA

I’ve been working in surround sound for a decade now. Most of the time I’m delivering mixes in 5.1 and Stereo, so when I make changes I need to make them fast and accurately. Before ORIA, I had my interface set up for surround, but monitor control wasn’t as easy and accurate as working with ORIA. It meant any change from Stereo to 5.1 wasn’t as smooth.

The problems I kept running into were in monitor control and calibration. They were the biggest headaches because the two were separate! Making any small changes at all would mean that my calibration wasn’t as accurate.

I feel like the overall post production market has been missing something like ORIA for years. It seemed that one interface would be really useful for music, but not so much for post production…and vice versa. Nothing solved all the problems all at once!

First Impressions

I try not to have any expectations, but I will say I was very surprised by the design and how many details were put into it. The most impressive thing for me with ORIA is that it just makes my life easier overall.

Setup was very smooth. The outputs already have the speaker assignments and the videos made by Audient basically walk you through setup step-by-step. It was really straightforward. A nice detail was finding that the outputs are already set to the specific speakers and named in the back of the unit.

The software that comes with ORIA is exceptional, offering a range of simple yet reliable options that have streamlined my workflow. A standout feature for me was the integration of SoundID, which was a pleasant surprise since I had already been using it for my software calibration. This integration made the transition seamless and added an extra layer of precision to my setup.

The hardware itself is impressive, with a minimalistic design which I really love. It integrates beautifully in my rack, and the build quality is rock solid, giving a sense of durability that is crucial in a professional studio.

I also appreciate the thoughtful layout of the unit. The primary controls are intuitively positioned with accessible knobs on the front panel, allowing for quick adjustments. The ORIA software offers in-depth control over speaker settings, providing flexibility that goes beyond the basics.

What truly stands out to me, even after just a few days of use, is that ORIA was clearly designed by industry professionals who understand the day-to-day challenges of audio production. It addresses common issues and genuinely makes our lives easier, offering a level of control over the speakers that is both comprehensive and user-friendly. It’s obvious that a lot of careful thought went into the design and functionality of ORIA.

Day to Day

After it was installed, I didn’t have to make any changes to my workflow at all. In fact my workflow has improved, as now I have my studio’s calibration integrated in the interface, I don’t have to worry about placing the calibration software in the master of my session and making sure that it’s bypassed.

I also like that Audient is constantly putting out software upgrades and making changes to improve the software.

It sounds great, the preamps are very clean and the sound coming from it is extremely clean.

I have to say I was surprised that an interface in that price range would be Dolby Atmos compatible as well as having such a clean overall sound. Overall ORIA did even more than I could hope for as the features it brings are just so useful for post production.

Final Thoughts

Overall I really enjoy the design and the software is brilliant. Audient is a reliable brand that has been doing this for many years and stands by its products.

This interface will do well in a market that has been crying out for something like this. In the past you needed a big and expensive setup. ORIA is very impressive especially in this price range.

I think that people doing post production and needing easy-to-use, dynamic options should really check out ORIA!

As for me? I am definitely looking into getting into Atmos in the near future. That will be very easy now I have ORIA in my setup.
