This article walks you through the process of measuring and calibrating your room using the ORIA Mini with Sonarworks SoundID Reference. Together, these tools deliver professional-grade room calibration for stereo monitors. ORIA Control’s built-in bass management will handle systems, with or without subwoofers.
ORIA Control calibrations can be imported directly from SoundID Measure, and If you choose not to use SoundID, you can measure your room with tools like Room EQ Wizard and then manually enter the EQ, trim, delay, crossover settings in ORIA Control. However, for the best results with the least effort, we strongly recommend using Sonarworks SoundID Reference in conjunction with the ORIA Control Software.
The ORIA Mini can store four calibration profiles. These profiles are customized for each set of monitors or listening positions. For example, Profile 1 for your main monitors, Profile 2 for the “mixcube” translation check, or other target curves produced by SoundID Reference. Or, Profile 1 for your main monitors at the primary listening position, Profile 2 for the same monitors at the “couch” position toward the rear of the room. Each profile requires a custom measurement and can be named and recalled through the ORIA Control Desktop software or by using the Mini’s front-panel button.
Wiring the ORIA Mini:
A few key things to note before wiring up:
- Functionality: ORIA Mini is a room correction processor and monitor controller that works with any audio interface and any speaker system. It is not an audio interface.
- Inputs and outputs: ORIA Mini offers two separate audio inputs (digital and analog) but only one set of outputs.
- Control: Speaker volume can be managed from your audio interface or via the ORIA’s control app, via a mouse, iPad, or StreamDeck.
- Power: The ORIA Mini is powered via its USB-C connection.
ORIA Mini with one set of monitors:
The DAW feeds your audio interface. The interface sends its monitor outputs to the ORIA Mini.
ORIA Mini applies calibration, then passes the signal to your monitors.
Getting Ready to Measure Your Monitors
To measure and calibrate your system, you’ll need:
- A connected ORIA Mini with its Control Desktop software and optional add-on license installed
- The Sonarworks SoundID Reference + Measure + Add on license (included in bundle)
- A calibrated measurement microphone (Included in bundle, though other mics with individual calibration profiles also work)
- An audio interface with at least one mic preamp (the ORIA Mini has no mic input)
A few applications will be involved. SoundID Measure collects speaker performance data. Then, SoundID Reference generates a calibration profile that can be transferred directly into the ORIA Control Desktop software.
A quick workflow note: After you’ve measured in SoundID Reference and exported the profile to your ORIA Mini, you can quit SoundID. ORIA Mini applies the profile on its own DSP, so audio will pass even if the ORIA app isn’t open; the app is just for day-to-day control. Make sure the SoundID app is closed/disabled during monitoring to avoid double processing.
Before measuring your room, ensure your speakers are positioned properly and that your subwoofer, if you have one, is properly integrated with your main speakers. The ORIA Control Desktop software provides subwoofer level, delay, and crossover control for bass-managed systems. These need to be set before measuring your speakers. If you add a sub, move your sub, or change your crossover settings, you’ll need to re-measure the room to create a new profile. Review our article on speaker setup for tips on that procedure.
Running SoundID Measure
To get started, plug the calibrated measurement microphone into mic input 1 of your audio interface and launch the SoundID Measure application. The ORIA Mini should be plugged into your computer via USB-C and powered on. The monitor outputs of your audio interface should be feeding the inputs of the ORIA Mini, and the Mini’s outputs should be connected to your monitors.
Launch the ORIA Control Desktop software, turn its volume to maximum, and select the appropriate analog or digital input. The ORIA Mini’s extremely high sound quality will not color the audio signal, and it can handle the same audio levels as any professional audio interface and monitors.
Next, launch SoundID Reference Measure and choose your speaker configuration. For stereo speakers—with or without a subwoofer—choose 2.0. The software will guide you through assigning the microphone calibration profile and checking mic and monitor levels. During the measurement process, you’ll be prompted to move the mic to different positions. Keep it at ear height (for a seated listener) and always point it directly towards the midpoint between the left and right speakers.
SoundID Reference begins by defining the listening area geometry using three sets of clicks and sweep tones. It then guides you through 38 measurements around the listening position, with on-screen instructions at each step. The process takes about 10 minutes. When complete, SoundID presents a graph showing the frequency response of your speakers in your room.
Interpreting and Applying the Measurement
SoundID’s measurement graph of a typical room. While this frequency response shows a respectable variation of only ±6 dB, SoundID will create a correction curve that improves the frequency response of your monitors.
While proper room setup and acoustic treatment lay the foundation for accurate monitoring, SoundID creates a corrective EQ curve that allows ORIA to optimize your speakers’ performance in the room. Once the SoundID Reference app has generated your profile preset, click the three dots next to the preset name in the left panel and select Export, or click the Export Preset to Devices button in the lower left.
When the list of devices appears, select Audient ORIA Mini. After a few seconds, the ORIA Mini application will prompt you to either create a new profile or overwrite an existing one. If you’ve already set up bass management, choose overwrite; otherwise, either option will work. In the ORIA app, you’ll see your profile automatically named and marked with the Sonarworks “S” logo, indicating that SoundID Reference generated this locked preset. If you wish, you can repeat the measurement process to create separate profiles for SoundID Reference Translation Checks such as car stereos, mobile phones, etc. Profiles can then be switched quickly from within the ORIA app or by using its front panel button.
You may quit the SoundID application, as your profile has been transferred into the ORIA Mini, and all audio that passes through it will be processed with the selected Profile settings. Your room is now calibrated for the most accurate sound possible.
Summary
Audient’s ORIA Mini brings professional-grade room calibration to any studio. Measure once, save your profile, and enjoy accurate, consistent monitoring across speakers and listening positions—so you can trust every mix. Audient, together with Sonarworks, has simplified the process, freeing you to focus on creativity, not tech.
